Preliminary results from the census of Bhalot.

Malik Bilal Mehdi and I are painfully entering the questionnaires into the computer together. Since I am a very slow Urdu reader and I have a lot of trouble reading hand written Urdu he does the reading and translating and I do the typing. Only if his translations seem awkward or unusual do we work together to get a better one-- otherwise all translating credit on these goes to Malik Bilal. This is the first 52 household interviews that have been entered into the computer. We have entered approcimately half of the questionnaires into the database. I have cut out most of the answers which name particular people. I went ahead and left some of the stray names in some answers (for example someone works on a particular person's land) because I have received permission from all of these men to use their names many itmes over and the likelihood that harm can come to the named people here is extremely slight (in fact I can't imagine how they could be harmed or embarrassed by it).

This is essentially why I like the web for dissemination. The census is not finished and so publishing preliminary results is only to show how it's looking so far-- it gives you a chance to see why I am sceptical of some of the results and why I want to be very careful what I assume or extrapolate from this. However as the census progresses I am increasingly pleased with some of the interviews and they are helping to suggest ways of getting better information Some of the blanks are due to different versions of the questionnaires being use, other blanks are something of a mystery. The column I've enjoyed the most so far has been why people think I'm living in the village.
