  GLOSSARY OF ANTHROPOLOGICAL TERMS



  Affine    Relative by marriage; adj. affinal.
  Agnate Kinsman or kinswoman related exclusively
  through males; adj. agnatic.
  Cognatic Kinsman or kinswoman related through any link,
  but excluding links through marriage.
  Consanguineal As for cognatic.
  Endogamous A group which bars to its members marriage
  with outsiders.
  Exogamous A group which bars marriage among its
  members.
  Jural Refers to formally and socially accepted rights,
  whether or not these are part of the law of the
State.
  Patrilateral Related through father (unlike patrilineal this
  term includes father’s kin through female links).
  Patrilineal As for agnatic; used particularly of kinship
  systems.
  Unilineal Patrilineal or matrilineal.
  Uxorilocal Residing with or near the wife’s kin (of a
  married couple or marriage).
  Virilocal Residing with or near the husband’s kin (or a
  married couple or marriage).
