Domba Song No. 26

 1  Vho dzulela ngomu:
   They don't know anything:
 2  Ho dzula Lambamai.
We have (only) reached the month of plenty (April).
 3  omu (= ) no i , mawee!
You have written a pass-book, alas!
 4  Nyatshavhungwa o i lamba?
   Has Nyatshavhungwa refused it?
5  Na vhasadzi vho i hwala,
   Even women must carry it,
 6  omu-mpasa yeneyi.
   This very pass-book.
 7  A vha hwali vho i hwala.
Those who do not carry it, must carry it.
 8  Zwo ri dina, Vho--Thengwe.
These things worry us, chief Ne-Thengwe.
9  Vha sa funi vho i hwala.
Even those who do not like it must carry it.
Chorus:  Ahee! Ndi zwi amba vhathu: " a swa."
Yes! That's what people are saying: "domba is coming to an end" (lit. burning).

There is always much speculation about the date for 'burning' domba, and this remains a closely guarded secret between the master of initiation, the ruler, and a few councillors. Rulers like to prolong domba, in order to enhance their own prestige and increase the collection of fees. But if it goes on too long, both the novices and their families grow impatient, especially if they want to go ahead with marriage arrangements.

'Lines' 3-9 were topical comment on the introduction of pass-books for women, which was one of the many pieces of discriminatory legislation introduced to reinforce the system of apartheid.
