Song No. 29

 1  Mulenzhe mbere.
She sits with her legs apart.
 Chorus:  U nonga ya shango.
   She resembles a zebra.

A stick is laid on the ground. Each girl in turn places her hands on top of her head and then with 'scissors' movements hops and places each leg alternately on either side of the stick.

Note the characteristic posture of holding the hand to the mouth.

One explanation is that the song reminds girls that they must sit properly, especially when working. Another is that whenever girls step over the doorstep (tshiukhuvha) into a hut, they must kneel. One expert insisted that it teaches girls not to have intercourse during their periods.
