Attitude of Women to Urbanisation and Westernisation

Glveren: visit to see {woman}, from Mersin, in her elder sister's house. Village women almost as curious about {her} as about me. Interest in her clothes, her
smoking, her hair style: why did she go to Mersin? Was Mersin a ky? Gasps of amazement at her descriptions of her city home, shops, the sea, etc. - they asked
her if it was like Kayseri. She said Kayseri was more like a ky than a ehir compared to Mersin and Adana. Women asked her if she was happy so far away from her
village. Certain amount of criticism - she had changed, they said, she was no longer one of them. Why didn't she wear their dress any more? Her abla {eZ}
produced a cushion cover which {her} daughter is embroidering in somewhat elaborate style - displayed it to the other women, laughing. "What's the good of
this? Why doesn't she teach her to make a yastk like we have here? The child can't spin or weave. What good is that to a girl?" {her mother} defended saying -
olsun { Alright}. You don't understand. We use these things in the city, an
