Attitudes to Us
Glveren: Sleyman's wife most anxious to see me. V. crestfallen, apparently, because I disappeared and had not talked to her. Delighted when I reappeared later
to talk. Mecmiye {visitor from Mersin}'s 2 sisters both fairly deferential and not too openly curious. Accepted easy way in which Mecmiye and I sat and ate
with the men, and the men talked with us, - but without joining in themselves. Stayed to talk for a while, but v. much in background, and soon disappeared.
Other women who came to talk after the men had left were as curious about Mecmiye as they were about me.
Note Sleyman's wife's surprise that I had married when I had been working independently and earning a salary. Great amazement at personal relations between
Paul and me, our sharing in work, his helping with housework, and especly the fact that we were still in love with each other. (see under Marriage: 1. p.
30.).
