Attitudes to Us {from p. 164}
Gwen, John, Roxane and hret Hanim {American teacher family from Talas School plus ? Turkish colleague} come out with us to village. Genuine welcome, delight
and interest in their coming. Interest in Roxane, her dress, her play, her speaking Turkish. Very intrigued by the fact that hret is unmarried. Thought we were
joking when we said she was a 'kz'. Women at once mentioned quite seriously the possibility of finding a husband for her in the village. But why wasn't she
married? - she looked nice. How wld. she get on without a husband? i(5218 Fatma Ko) {widow}, however, thought she was better off without one at the moment - "
iin yok - kocan, ouklarn yok, - her gn serbest sin, Gezebilirsin." But she thought she shld. think about finding a husband for later - "Life v. difficult
without a husband - look at me." Why didn't she marry into the village: she could be the retmen and her husband cld. work the land.
{PS...?: hret} was wearing trousers. - "next time you come to the village, don't wear those", said {>5204? i(Fatma) - "wear a pretty dress. A girl who is ready
for marriage should always wear a pretty dress so as to attract a man. Those trousers are alright for working in, but not to win a husband."
