The women appear to me to have a clear distinction {PS...?: between} sickness and any discomfort arising out of pregnancy and childbirth or indeed anything to
do with maternity. {> person's name? i(Abide), village emme {gl: normally 'ebbe' midwife. Impossible to know if this is village dialect, or M's mistake or
clerical error}, whom I am told to consult re my failure to have children, comes to us for medicines for tummy ache, eye trouble, etc., and brings her friends
from other villages. Sleymanli woman today brings her 'gelin' with small baby, and asks me for medicines for the baby who is weak. She also says her 'gelin' is
having vomiting, but doesn't ask medicines for this. Later I found 'gelin' to be 5 months pregnant, so I remarked that her sickness was prob{ably} due to this.
Mother-in-law appeared v. surprised that I shld. realise this connection. Her attitude seemed to be, How do I, who am 'taze' and have borne no children, know
that pregnant women often have sickness. But she had expected me to unde
