Salguma. V. pleasant village. Has a natural spring which feeds a large pond in the middle of the village, and a stream which runs down through 4 villages
(Nize, Vekse,Isbidin, etc.). Able to make profit

out of selling water rights to these other villages. Trees surround the pond, and are planted right along beside the stream the whole way to Nize. 7 water
mills running off this stream - once profitable, but their business now seriously threatened by the mill at Sleymanli and will be more so when i(0039 Hahmet
Aslan) has completed his mill at Sakaltutan.Large new school building - red gabled roof. 100 pupils. 2 boys at Lycee. Pop. about 1,000. Prob? about 100 usta,
50 ziraat houses.
Gen. econ. standard of village well above Sakalt. level. Well-built stone houses, many with 'oda', plenty of windows - painted frames, etc. Flowers growing in
boxes on many window ledges - e.g. Muhtar's house.

Nize. Prosperous village. Large stone houses. Door leads into courtyard with stables and lavatory. Steps lead up to living rooms and kitchen, etc. Flowers on
window ledges. Very good position on slope of steep ravine looking across to Darsya Ky. Vineyards and orchards fill the bottom of the valley. Green and
luscious. Two thoroughly urbanised families living in the village: one, that of Kayseri coal supervisor, uses it as a summer residence, the other is occupied
generally throughout the year - wife an Istanbul bred girl, daughter of a lise mdr. Their living room is furnished in city style - richly carpeted, sideboard,
large polished table, chairs, couch, etc. Wife goes about with head uncovered, bare arms and legs and Western style dress. Village women very curious about her
to begin with, she says, but have got accustomed to her now. Most of the women in the village wear traditional village style dress, though far less ragged &
threadbare than majority of women in these villages, e.g. sisters of the young

Vekse: Appears less prosperous than Nize but still well above level of most of the Talas 'nahiye' villages. Stone built houses, several with rooms opening on
very pretty courtyards, with flowers growing. Women all appear to wear village dress and covered their faces before a strange man. Large new school building -
boys and girls both go to school. 5 classes. Children can go onto 'orta okulu', Old Greek. church - formerly a Greek Xian village. Village built down steep
hillside. About 80 houses. Valley at bottom has stream running through it, & is very fertile. Prolific orchard and vineyards - cool and shady. Wonderful sight
from the top of the hill above the village to look down on the valley below - densely packed with trees. Orchards long established - back to Greek. Xian. days
- abundance of fruit - apricots, plums, apples, pears, particularly. Grafting of trees being practised. Apricots being dried on the roof tops of every house.

Gesi, Nize, Vekse, sbidin, are connected with Kayseri by a daily lorry which runs throughout the winter - hence none of these villages is ever as cut off as
the villages higher up on the plateau in the Sakaltutan area.
