Attitudes to Strangers

Elba - first morning. Went to fetch water. Group of women interested, anxious that I shld. stop. Surprised that I should fetch water - let the Beki's wife do
it - you can pay a servant. Contrast with Sakaltutan women. These women seem more class conscious - you are a hanm, you should sit at home temiz and rahat, and
let a kadn do your work.

Interested in my clothing, where I'd come from, but not such blatant curiosity as in other villages. Seemed more used to strangers passing through.

Met the onba's { gendarme corporal} daughter at the well. Very composed. Came forward to say "ho geldiniz" and shook my hand. Made all customary polite exchage
of greetings, unlike any of the other women I'd met. Invited me to their house.
