Zeynep ( Ankaral) {craft teacher's W} and Nebiye ( Onba's { gendarme's} W) discussing village life v. conscious of their status above the village women -
the onba's wife making more of this than Zeynep. It was nice having me living in the village, she said - another hanm for them to visit. They could not visit
the village women - evleri pis { their houses dirty}. But they both talk to the village women if they come to their odas. Nebiye gossips with them. Her
children play all day with village women. I suspect that most of her superior airs are put on for my benefit - to identify herself with the hanm level
vis-a-vis the village women.- and that when Zeynep and I are not about, she relies completely on her village neighbours for company, social activity.
