Village - External.

Attitude of Women to Urbanisation, Westernisation.

More memurlar {officials} in this village, consequently more hanmlar {ladies}. Elba Ky kadnlar {women} seem to have more constraint about approaching the
'hanmlar' freely than, e.g., one got in Sakaltutan. Sakaltutan women so unused to seeing hanmlar at close quarters that they were openly curious. Elba village
women seem, as far as I can estimate so far, to keep their distance unless pressed to come and talk, i.e. more awareness of social levels here than in
Sakaltutan.

e.g. I stopped to talk to women of the 'dkkn' locality near the steps leading to the Onba's house. They said how pleased they were that I'd stopped to talk.
Onba's daughter came out and called to me to come in. I said I hadn't finished my conversation yet. Keziban called out to Mnever - she's talking to us, she
wants to talk to us, we want to talk to her as well as you, we can talk to her if she wants to talk with us (a slightly defensive attitude which I don't think
I wld. have found in Sakaltutan because the women there are so much of one level and unused to anyone fr. {a} different stratum).

k< awareness of social hierarchy>
