Visit to i(0086 Haydar). Room full of grandchildren. I showed old photos and gave one or two. The son we interviewed was there (motorised bicycle) i(0090
Mustafa Bekar). So was i(0373 Hseyin) - Elazig Technical Education Dept. - and the grandson who lives in Talas with i(0086 Haydar's) sister and goes to
school there. A very social visit; I made no notes and now find gaps in the cards.
Once again the oft repeated pressure about the "Incil" {gl : New Testament}. How could people possibly believe that Allah was Isa's Father. The Melek {gl :
angel}breathed in her mouth to make her pregnant and Isa was born from her mouth.
I did not respond at first, and then fell back on saying "baba" has lots of different meanings. E.g. we are all the "children" of God, e.g. Haci Baba.
{A problem} [What is interesting is that lots of people are intensely interested in these details and seem to be worried not about the beliefs of other people
but about the precise truth. They want the words to be "true" in a simple literal way. And simply to say different people have different beliefs does not
satisfy them. This raises for me very fundamental questions about what one might call the ethnography of truth.]
i(0373 Hs.) wants to be a teacher. In his Dept., a job is certain and easy. He could do an M.A. in Engineering, but at the moment he does not want to do
so.
We discussed why so few educated from Sak. They said it is changing and more and more want to stay at school. [The flood of unsatisfied lise graduates will
increase.]
