Kurban {gl :Festival of Sacrifices}. As in 1984, i(0185 A.O.) had looked up in the Koran the correct "dua" {gl : prayer} for the Kurban.
The vlg. was full of groups of people in havla and in public digging holes, tying up cows and sacrificing them, then settling down to skin and cut up the dead
animal.
Roughly, for a cow, the people tie the head with rope, then put a rope round the front legs and throw the cow on its side. Several people sit on it, and
i(0185 A.O.) (expert?) tied the legs together. The cows I saw put up a fairly active and effective resistance.
They then get the animal near a hole they have dug to catch the blood [a terrible waste of nutrition!] and argue about the sharpness of the knife.
Finally, i(0185 A.O.) held the head back, caressed the throat okurkin (praying?reciting?) and made a sharp incision, going for wind pipe and the nerves. The
victim reacts by kicking and struggling violently and may take a long time (i.e. 5 minutes) finally to stop all reaction. They then sever the head and start
skinning.
N.B. In i(0135 Aht. Gkpinar's) case and in i(0185 A.O.'s) own case, people formally shake
hands, mutter a formula and for those sharing the sacrifice who are absent they appoint a "vekil" {gl : agent}by mutual agreement.
When doing (in a hurry) i(0135 Aht. Gkpinar's) sacrifice, i(0185 A.O.) asked formally whose sacrifice it was and some people shook hands.
In his own case, in i(0527 Hasan's) yard, i(0817 Sleyman) was not present nor was i(Fatima) his gelin, and "vekil" were formally agreed.

I asked in other cases, but did not make notes. However, 30,000 - 35,000
seemed standard - i.e. roughly the price of one sheep. [A good cow in milk (local) fetches 250,000 TL plus and a "........" etc. 1/2 m. TL. These are not
good cows.]
