Turkish Village Paul Stirling Copyright 1965, 1994 Paul Stirling. All rights reserved A NOTE ON MONEY AND MEASUREMENTS MONEY From I950 to I952 the official rates of exchange were T.L. (Turkish Liras) 7.8 to XI T.L. 2.8 to U.S. $I.00 These rates are some what unreal. Black market rates were much higher, and what counts is purchasing power in relation to certain needs. But some indication of value is desirable and I have given rough equivalents in round numbers in sterling and dollars where I have had to refer to Turkish currency. MEASURES For local land measures, see p. 52. Officially, I donum = I decare. I have given rough equivalents in acres and in hectares in most cases. Transactions in grain are conducted both by weight and by cubic measures of volume. This creates some problems; but since none of the quantities are more than estimates, I have accepted the village statements of equivalence to the metric system. By chance, standard four-gallon petrol cans (five American gallons) are used as measures of volume, so that conversion is simple. I therefore give quantities in British and metric measures, where appropriate. |
