Vhagogwa - THE TLOKWA

(Tshikundu - THE SHANGANA-TSONGA MAN)

The Tlokwa are a Northern Sotho group living in the Transvaal. Of three wooden statuettes that are shown, the larger man and women are generally called Tlokwa, and the smaller man is called Tshikundu, which is a personal name.

Statuettes are shown to the youths and girls while they sing domba in the council hut (the roof had collapsed during a storm a few days previously).

It is Swethani and his wife: Swethani came out finely adorned from Nzhelele, where the shrubs [Fluggea microcarpa Blume] grow. Tshikundu is alone: his wife has stayed at home: she is pregnant. When a woman is pregnant, she does not walk about.
