Many clay models, and especially those of snakes, are painted with spots or stripes, or decorated with differently coloured maize seeds. Very often the name of the show and the symbolism of its colours are the only information that the novices are given. The colours red, white, black, and sometimes yellow, symbolise respectively women (between the menarche and menopause), men, old women, and old men.
