Author's Note: This description and analysis should be read together with the notes on, and the musical transcriptions of, the songs and recreational songs of domba, which were given in the previous section of this CD-Rom (Notes on the Musical Transcriptions). Unless otherwise stated, bar numbers are given only for the transcription of domba and tshilalelo which follow this analysis. In transcribing the pattern of the domba drums, I have generally omitted rests and, in order to reveal its structure, I have assigned to each drum beat note-values equivalent to the time-intervals between them.
