Whether or not they really feel it, the novices are expected to show fear and humility, and to shake when they sing:

 Song No. 5

 1 U a lila ,
She weeps when she stands up and makes a fool of herself.
2 Hu pfi Nga i lile ngoma!
They say, "Let the drum sound!"
 Chorus: U a lila ,
She weeps when she stands up and makes a fool of herself.

The words refer to the frightened novice who has to come out and dance in front of her seniors. At vhusha and tshikanda, they also sing Ha athu a lila (she has not yet cried) (Vhusha Song No. 6), which is designed to make novices weep. If they do not, they are considered to be proud and unbending, and are pinched so that they may cry.
