Traditional Ceremony, Lubwe, Luapula Province, Zambia, 30 October 1999.
Lubwe is a small town on the shores of Lake Bangweulu, in the area that
Mitchell cites as the source of the Kalela dance. Kitwe is a Copperbelt
town included in Mitchell's social survey of the Copperbelt. The Kwanga
Ceremony is a recently developed event celebrating the history of the
Ng'umbo people of Lake Bangweulu, many of whom worked as miners or other
labourers on the Copperbelt at the time of Mitchell's study, much like
the Bisa people from whom were drawn the team that features in
Mitchell's book. (photo by Jifumbe T. Mgala)
