The dowry property

As a contrast - look at another dowry list, that of a pastoralist's daughter in a mountain village in Corsica. A brief discussion notes the main differences between dowry practice in the two settings.


A used trabacca (four poster bed) of walnut with bedframe; 2 mattresses filled with wool; 4 pillows filled with wool, 2 large and 2 small; 2 pairs of pillowcases, 1 large pair with laced borders, 1 small pair with the same type of border; another 4 of mixed Dutch fabric, 2 large and 2 small with lace borders; 3 pairs of sheets, that is 1 embroidered and the others of cloth from the town of Andria, all new; 4 bedhangings, that is 2 of high class material with edgings, and two of household quality with edgings, all new; two used blankets, 1 of carded manta (a type of woollen cloth) and the other of bombast; 15 new towels/napkins; 6 new towels/napkins of Flemish cloth; 4 misali (cloth measure) of Interlocigno cloth, 2 double and 2 single; a new cambric tablecloth with edgings, and two others with edgings made of mixed Dutch fabric, and two more of fabric for everyday use; 6 women's blouses, 4 with embroidered sleeves and two everyday ones, all new; 3 new embroidered handkerchiefs; an embroidered apron slightly used ; a used dress of scottino (fabric) with a bodice and skirt; a used skirt of satin (or velvet) with small golden embroidered flowers; a bodice of damask with golden epaulettes; 2 strands of precious stones with gold links, 61 links in all; a pair of gold earrings to the value of 36 carlini; 2 gold rings to the value of 5 ducats; a new large copper cauldron, half a barrel in size; a new smaller copper pan (sartaggine) worth 12 carlini together with other kitchen utensils; 2 new walnut chests medium sized; a new walnut buffet and another used large buffet; 8 new straw seated chairs; a medium sized mirror with a black frame; 4 used medium sized pictures plus 4 ducats in cash to buy a bedcurtain. The said furniture that is ready to be consigned on the day of the betrothal and the rest to be consigned by the month of December, at which time the full transfer should be completed.

And finally 100 ducats in cash, payable by the dowry giver in the following manner; 20 ducats by the fair of Santa Lucia this year, and the remaining 80 ducats by next year's harvest, 1732, without any interest. The said Giuseppe can make use of the 100 ducats as capital in his trade as a shoemaker, without being formally obliged to invest the dowry money in securities. And as far as the dispensation for their kinship, which will cost 18 ducats, the two parties agree to pay half from the dowry giver and half from the future husband, Giuseppe.
