The dowry - property and obligations


Formal promises made by Niccolo Allegro. He firstly promises to give his daughter in marriage to Giuseppe Corvino. Then he promises (text not reproduced) to consign to Giuseppe as the stated dowry for Gaetana his daughter, the property and money stated below.


A long list (over a page of text) describing the items which make up Gaetana's dowry. Each type of object is noted along with the number. For instance sei Camiscie di Don'a, quattro con mar? d'orlettone, e due per ogni giorni nuove - 6 womens' shifts, 4 with ?? and two new ones for everyday use.

Household furniture and linen, personal clothes, jewellery and domestic utensils make up the property. The items must be delivered by December of the current year.


After the list of property, any money which forms part of the dowry is noted along with credit terms. Gaetana was given 100 docati in cash. This was to be paid in 2 installments. The first of 20 docati by the next fair of Santa Lucia (an important winter festival in Ascoli), and the other by harvest time next year, 1732. Giuseppe can use this money as capital in his trade as a shoemaker. without any penalty. This type of clause is found only in the marriage contracts of artisans. Normally husbands are expected to secure the dowry on designated immovable property - houses, land, etc. This section also refers to the dispensation for close kinship which the couple require to get married which will cost 18 docati. Giuseppe will pay half of this and Gaetana's father the other half.
