Houses and House Interiors
Vekse. i(Bekir Karabalut)'s house. Door from street leads into dark little outer room - where water and pots and pans are kept, and the 'ev' opens off this
with 'tandr', etc. 'Ev' is very dark - used mainly as a kitchen, I think: certainly while we were there the family were all upstairs in and around the 'oda'.
Steps by the street door lead up to a large porch: bedding and boxes stored in a corner - the 3 sons sleep here, just outside the 'oda'. One 'oda', used by the
men for sitting in opens directly off this porch: another door leads on to the roof, with a ladder up to the upper roof (above the 'oda'). A small flight of
steps inside leads to a newly built room which {husband} and his wife use for sleeping. The main 'oda' is furnished usual pattern - rather more urbanised than
in Sk., e.g. sedir only along 2 sides, chairs, and a sideboard along another side, with 'mangal' and wood-burning stove. Pressure lamp and hurricane lamp as
well as ordinary oil lamps. Sewing machine (Singer) belonging to wife. Large
