egota - THE COUNCILLOR
The novices are shown the erect stump of a tree fern (mudima , Cyathea Dregei Kze.), whose bark has been partially cut off, and on top of which some kind of a head-dress has been placed. Note that in the milayo of the countryside, the big man (muhulu) of the water is a tree fern, while the councillor () of the water is a frog (see milayo Nos. 174 and 175). |

- Ndi mbolo ya : hune ima ngaho ndi munna a konaho: ndi munna wa tsilu.
It is the phallus of young men: where it stands on the ground, it is a potent man: up and above it it is an impotent man.

Note that this is the only occasion on which black is described as old men rather than old women (see colour symbolism). |
