State of souls register for Ascoli Satriano, 1709

The 1709 State of Souls register for the town of Ascoli is a very simple but in many ways confusing document. Firstly, there are no clear divisions between houses. Sometimes the phrase nella stessa casa appears. This indicates a subdivision of a house, but where the casa itself begins remains uncertain. An attempt has been made to identify residential groups through the relationships given in the text. From this, admittedly speculative, exercise, the households were found to be largely nuclear.

C Chr Caterina Calicchi keeper of hospital of Onofrio Popoli aged 37
Chr Lonardo son aged 14
+ Donat Antonio son aged 12
C Chr Angela Calicchi aged 76
C Chr Caterina Bozza aged 30
C Chr Madelena Danese widow aged 93 ......

In this case it is clear that Caterina Calicchi and her two sons live in the hospital which she looks after. The crosses probably mean that the family later moved elsewhere. From 1731 Lionardo is recorded as living with his own family near to the hospital, but not in it. Whether Angela Calicchi formed part of this family is not known from this document.
