State of souls register for Ascoli Satriano, 1731

The first of the very detailed registers for Ascoli dates from 1731. It was compiled by the Archpriest Francesco Misisca who had trained at Benevento. It lists people by house, noting subdivisions and whether rented or owned. Houses are grouped into districts (streets of contrade) and sometimes, as in the illustration here, located relative to other buildings. For persons, the names of both parents are generally given, except in the case of co-resident offspring.

Lionardo Popoli lives with his wife and three children just outside the S Antonio gate in Ascoli. Their 'habitation' which may imply something less than a house, is below House 22 of the previously listed area (Strada della Catedrale). Ascoli is built on three hills, so that houses in one street are sometimes built directly underneath those further up the slope. In this case however, it seems likely that Lionardo and family lived in a 'cellar' dwelling in the sottana or ground floor of a higher class residence.
